How can I find information on patents?

Nexis Uni is a great resource for patent information. To navigate to this database, click the Databases tab in the search area of the Library's homepage. Then, click the letter N and scroll to find the link to Nexis Uni.

Once you have accessed Nexis Uni, click the Menu button at the top of the screen to select Patent.

You can search by company name as well as specific patent numbers. The company's name may be suggested as you type. Click this and then click the search button.

 

Search example using General Electric with companies suggested below

 

You will be directed to TotalPatent One in a new browser tab. It is normal to see a blank white page for ~30 seconds while this tool loads.

 

If you searched by Company, your unfiltered list of results may be quite lengthy. Click the Filters icon Filters icon at the top left corner of the page to begin using the provided limiters to narrow your results to your needs. You can limit by Patent Type, Legal Status, Publication Year, Inventor, CPC or IPC code, and more.

Click the PDF icon in your results to view full text of the patent.
