Do I have to create a profile or account to use a database?

Answer

It is generally not necessary to create an account to use a database, as long as you are using the links provided within McDermott Library webpages. In most cases, you will either:

  • Gain immediate access because your device's IP address is recognized as one that is on campus, or
  • Gain access after being prompted to enter your NetID and password because you are off campus.

There are a handful of exceptions. The following resources require a quick (free) account set up in order to enjoy general use or increased functionality:

HathiTrust - Registration is not required, but this resource has a quick added step to gain full access. Find the “Log In” button in the upper-right corner, choose “University of Texas at Dallas” as your institution, and then click Continue to log in with your NetID.

LearningExpress - A personal account is necessary in order to save your work in progress, store score reports, and revisit any practice tests, tutorials, or eBooks in the EBSCO Learning environment. Click Register then ensure that University of Texas at Dallas is set as your Institution before completing the required fields.

LinkedIn Learning - An account is not required for access but it is necessary if you are interested in sharing progress or generating certificates/badges. Visit our new user page to get started.

New York Times (1851-Current) - Click "Create Account" then enter your UT Dallas email address and NET ID password to set up a New York Times Academic Pass account. Your account can then be used to access New York Times from any computer or the mobile app. Note: New York Times is also searchable in Nexis Uni and Business Insights: Global.

O'Reilly Online Learning (formerly Safari Books Online) - Accessible just by entering your UT Dallas email address, however you can make notes, bookmark pages, download for offline use on smart phones / tablets, and avoid the occasional timeout while using Safari off campus by creating a free account. Click "Not listed" at the top of the "Institution" chooser to get started.

Roper Center for Public Opinion Research - While not required for access, registration enables you to download datasets and create iPoll questions.

SciFinder - Visit the registration page and use your UT Dallas email to register.

Shoah Visual History Archive - Can be used as a “Guest.” However, a free account should be created to ensure off-campus access.

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS) - Registration for this resource is done by request. Jump to: How do I gain access to Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS)?
