Where can I find a list of banned or challenged books?
Answer
What is a banned or challenged book?
The American Library Association (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) receives reports from libraries, schools, and the media about attempts to ban books in communities across the country. They compile lists of challenged books in order to inform the public about censorship efforts that affect libraries and schools. To raise awareness, they conduct Banned Books Week every year and release a list of banned and challenged books from the past year.
A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Visit ALA's About Banned Books page to learn more about why books are challenged.
The American Library Association has compiled lists of frequently challenged books, such as this list of the top 10 most challenged books, by year.
